The history of Westmarch

How a human kingdom became a demonic capital.

Original HellCodex illustration. Not official Blizzard artwork.

Westmarch is a human kingdom on the Western Continent, and one of the places the series has used to represent organised human power rather than frontier survival.

This page summarises established series lore and is labelled Analysis. The Diablo V-specific facts are on Westmarch: the throne of Diablo.

A city built to hold

Westmarch's role in earlier games was as a fortified human centre - the kind of place that exists to demonstrate that humanity can build something that lasts.

Why Blizzard chose it

Confirmed: Diablo rules Sanctuary from the throne of Westmarch. Choosing an established human capital rather than inventing a new demonic one is a deliberate statement - the seat of power did not need to be built, only taken.

The inheritance

The player being the Heir to Westmarch means the game's protagonist has a formal claim to a city that is currently the enemy's headquarters. What that claim is worth has not been explained.
