Westmarch: the throne of Diablo
The city that used to be humanity's refuge is now the seat of the Lord of Terror.
Westmarch is the fixed point of Diablo V's setting. Diablo rules from its throne, and the player character is the Heir to Westmarch. Both are confirmed.
From refuge to seat of power
Westmarch has appeared before in the series as a human stronghold on the Western Continent. Diablo V inverts it: the city is no longer a place you retreat to, it is the centre of the thing you are fighting.
What the city is being used for
Sanctuary, ruled from Westmarch, functions as the staging ground for an assault on the High Heavens. The population and their souls are used as weapons in the Eternal Conflict. That is confirmed, and it reframes the city as infrastructure for a war rather than a location in a story.
Still unknown
- Whether Westmarch is playable, and in what state.
- How the procedural world system applies to a ruled capital.
- What "heir" means legally, politically or narratively.
