How Diablo V's caravan works

Your hub is a convoy of survivors, and it moves with you.

Original HellCodex illustration. Not official Blizzard artwork.

Diablo V has no permanently safe city. Blizzard replaced the town hub with a growing caravan of survivors that travels with the player.

Confirmed roles

  • Merchants
  • Companions
  • Quest givers
  • Narrative characters

A fifth role - upgrade stations for crafting and supply - was described as a possibility. We file it as a developer statement until it is shown.

Confirmed members

Two caravan members have been named. A former Sister of the Sightless Eye, which ties the caravan directly to the Rogue order of Diablo II. And a stranded Treasure Goblin searching for a new purpose in a ruined world - the series' running joke, reframed as a refugee.

Why this is a systems decision, not set dressing

A town is a fixed point: you always know where the vendor is. A caravan is a resource that travels, grows and presumably can be at risk. Combined with a world that reshapes itself between visits, removing the fixed hub removes the one thing in a Diablo game that never changed.

Open questions

  • Can the caravan be attacked or lost?
  • Does recruiting members gate services behind progress?
  • Is the caravan shared in multiplayer?
  • Does it have a physical location on the map at all times?

What the return of runewords means

Runes and runewords in the Diablo II style are planned, but the supporting rules that made them work have not been described.
