Plague Knight
Faith endures, even in decay. A new force rises from forgotten horrors.
The Plague Knight is the headline class of the Diablo V announcement, because it is the only one that has never existed in the series before. Its loop, as Blizzard described it, is a two-step cycle: spread disease, then consume that disease as a source of power.
That is unusual for an action RPG. Most classes in the genre build a resource by hitting things. A class that seeds an effect across a battlefield and then harvests it is closer to a board state than a rotation.
Why the fantasy fits this game
Diablo V opens after the loss. Sanctuary has fallen, its people have been made into weapons for the Eternal Conflict, and corruption is the ordinary condition of the world rather than a threat on the horizon. A class that treats plague as fuel is thematically native to that premise in a way a returning hero archetype is not.
The paragraph above is HellCodex analysis. Blizzard has confirmed the mechanic, not the reasoning behind it.
What we are watching for
- Whether disease spreads between enemies on its own, or only where you place it.
- Whether consuming a disease removes it, or upgrades it.
- How the class interacts with the returning rune and runeword systems.
- Whether the class carries any risk to the player or to other players.
None of these have answers yet. When they do, they move into the confirmed list above and the change is logged.
