How the procedural world changes Sanctuary
Five things can be different the next time you walk through.
Diablo has always had procedural generation. What Blizzard has described for Diablo V is different in scope: not a dungeon rolled at entry, but a world that is altered between visits.
The five confirmed variables
- Terrain - the shape of the ground itself.
- Points of interest - what is worth walking towards.
- Enemies - who holds the area.
- Rewards - what the area is worth.
- Demonic corruption - how far gone the area is.
Why corruption is the interesting one
Four of those five are standard roguelike variables. Corruption is not. Blizzard framed the changing world as reflecting Diablo's advancing rule, which implies direction rather than randomness - a world that gets worse, not merely different.
That directionality is a developer statement, not a confirmed mechanic. If it turns out to be cosmetic, this page will say so.
What has not been explained
- What triggers a reshuffle - time, story progress, player action?
- Whether anything persists: cleared camps, unlocked shortcuts, caravan routes.
- How fixed quest content coexists with shifting geography.
- Whether corruption can be pushed back, or only slowed.
