Blizzard: the "PC version" whisper was not a platform announcement

A PR director said the quiet part. Nine days later Blizzard took it back.

At the Diablo V press session on 12 September somebody asked the obvious question: which platforms? Game director Joe Shely said there was nothing to announce, and that the team wants as many people as possible to be able to play.

Then a voice off to one side said, loudly enough for the room to hear it, "PC version." Shely, to laughter: "You're not supposed to tell them!" The voice again: "If we're not on the PC, we've got problems."

That got reported as a slip that had confirmed a platform. Nine days later Blizzard said it was not one:

For Diablo, we want to clarify that the comment came from the Diablo PR Director and it was an acknowledgement that PC and Battle.net are foundational to Blizzard, not an announcement of our complete platform plans.

What that leaves

Formally, nothing. Not a single platform is announced, which is why platforms are still on the list of things Blizzard has not answered at all. Reports that name PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S are filling the gap themselves; none of them can cite an announcement, because there has not been one.

The gap is not a formality either. Spring 2029 is far enough out that the question is not only which platforms but which generation of them - a game three years away may well be aimed at hardware that is not on sale yet. Reading "PC is confirmed" as "the current consoles are confirmed" skips exactly that.

Why this is a developer statement and not confirmed

Blizzard said it, so it is not a rumour. Blizzard did not publish it - it went to reporters who asked - so it is not confirmed either. That distinction is the whole reason the middle badge exists, and this is close to a textbook case of it: an official position, stated on the record, that you cannot find on any Blizzard page.

"Community involvement, as early as possible"

In a BlizzCon group interview with Kotaku, John Mueller said Joe Shely had written "community involvement, as early as possible" down as a pillar for the team at the start of development.
