Sets as a "player quest", and item names that tell you their power

Joe Shely on what Diablo V takes from Diablo II - and on the overlay map he once argued against.

Blizzard's panel recap said two things about items that this codex files as confirmed: equipment sets return, and itemisation is strongly influenced by Diablo II. In his BlizzCon interview with Rhykker, published on 7 October and reported by DiabloFilter, senior game director Joe Shely said a little more about both.

Sets

Sets come back "in a more traditional sense", DiabloFilter reports, rather than the talisman approach Diablo IV took. Shely described collecting a set as a "player quest", meant to "broaden the range of viable builds rather than narrow them", and as a way into endgame progression.

That answers part of the question the sets page left open: sets are meant to be a goal and a build option, not the one build. It does not say how they sit alongside runewords, which bonuses they give, or how many there are.

Names that mean something

From Diablo II, Shely said, comes the idea that "the item's name will tell you something about its power level" - which Diablo III and Diablo IV mostly did not do. How the names are tiered has not been shown.

DiabloFilter also writes that Diablo V will restore stat requirements on items. It quotes nobody saying so, and Blizzard's own words are that it is "experimenting with" them - so that is how this codex keeps filing it. See itemisation.

The overlay map

Rhykker reminded Shely that before Diablo IV launched, Shely had argued against an overlay map; Diablo IV added one later, after players asked for it. Shely's answer, as quoted: "I am 100% on camera somewhere telling people why they don't want an overlay map." He described the change as a shift towards building "the game players actually want, rather than coming in to explain why they shouldn't want something" - the same pillar the team described to Kotaku, see community involvement, as early as possible.

DiabloFilter's summary adds that the overlay map and loot filters will be in Diablo V at launch. That is the reporter's summary, not a quote, and this page does not file it as a statement until someone at Blizzard is on the record for it.

Solo, group, and Diablo IV

Shely repeated that all content can be played solo or in a group, and said rewards should not feel "overwhelming in one direction" - no new detail beyond what Blizzard has said about multiplayer. On Diablo IV: "Both games have bright futures." See Diablo IV seasons after Diablo V's launch.

How it is filed

Developer statements, through a written report of a video interview. Where DiabloFilter quotes Shely, the page quotes it; where it only summarises, the page says so. Its line that Blizzard "will start talking about Diablo 5 in more depth early next year" names no speaker, and the only published plan is still the development updates from 2027. Rhykker's remark that concept art hints at the archangel Auriel is his reading of a picture.

"Community involvement, as early as possible"

In a BlizzCon group interview with Kotaku, John Mueller said Joe Shely had written "community involvement, as early as possible" down as a pillar for the team at the start of development.
