"Community involvement, as early as possible"

Why Diablo V was revealed two and a half years out, in the team's own words.

Spring 2029 is a long way off for a reveal, and Kotaku asked the team about it directly. Its report from a BlizzCon group interview, published on 15 September, has senior art director John Mueller describing how development started: several leads wrote down what they wanted from the game, and game director Joe Shely wrote "community involvement, as early as possible". It became, in Mueller's words, a team pillar.

Why early

Mueller's argument is about timing. Diablo IV involved its community, and that went well, he said, but it could have gone better: feedback that arrives late is feedback there is no time left to build - "it's going to go into a patch". Tiffany Watt put the same idea from the other end: "it's important that we are building the game that the community wants."

That matches what Blizzard itself published after the panel - that it revealed the game this early to listen, and to learn what excites players most - see the panel recap.

What it does not promise

No test phase, no feedback programme and no date for either. The only concrete channel is still the development updates planned from 2027. On the date itself, executive producer Matt Zitterman repeated what the team said elsewhere: their confidence "comes from both clarity of creative vision and clarity of production schedule" - see confident about spring 2029.

How it is filed

A developer statement. Shely's line reaches us second-hand: Mueller recounting what Shely wrote down, reported by Kotaku.
