In Diablo V, how you look is no longer decided by your class

Appearance and background are chosen apart from the class. The details are not out.

In Diablo IV, picking a class still picked a body. A druid was heavy-set whatever you did with the sliders - players called it the "dad bod druid". Diablo V drops that. At BlizzCon, senior game director Joe Shely and senior art director John Mueller told the YouTuber Rhykker that you choose your character's appearance and background separately from the class. Rhykker published the interview on 7 October; this page cites the two written reports of it, DiabloFilter's and 4Fansites'.

Mueller described the goal as "more RPG character creation than we've ever had" in the series - building on Diablo IV, the first Diablo with a character editor at all.

Still the heir to Westmarch

Whatever you look like, the story casts you as the heir to Westmarch. Rhykker asked how a character from a far corner of Sanctuary fits that role. According to 4Fansites, Shely and Mueller pointed to later reveals rather than answering.

What has not been said

Which options the editor offers, what a "background" is and whether it changes anything in play, and whether a class keeps any look of its own. None of it has been described.

How it is filed

A developer statement: two named directors, on camera, not in a Blizzard post. The video itself is not the citation - YouTube answers the same way for a removed video as for a live one, so this site's link checker could never notice it going away. The two reports agree on the substance; the quote is DiabloFilter's.

"Community involvement, as early as possible"

In a BlizzCon group interview with Kotaku, John Mueller said Joe Shely had written "community involvement, as early as possible" down as a pillar for the team at the start of development.
