The first Diablo V cinematics have been shot

A sound stage, a hashtag, and nothing about what was on it.

On 14 October Neil David Carter, cinematics director for the Diablo series at Blizzard, posted a photo of an empty sound stage on his X account, with a three-word caption: "First shoot #Diablo5". GamesRadar+ reported it the next day. That is the whole announcement - no scene, no character, no cast.

What it tells us

That production on Diablo V's cinematics has started, about two and a half years before the spring 2029 window. It is the first sign of the game moving since BlizzCon, and it fits Blizzard's own description of the game as early in development: a script far enough along to put on a stage is not a game far enough along to show.

It does not tell us what was filmed, whether it is the opening cinematic or an in-game scene, or whether it will survive to release. Scenes shot this early are reshot and cut all the time. Coverage describing a "motion capture" shoot is reading the photo; Carter did not say so.

"Best campaign ever"

Cinematics matter more than usual here, because Blizzard has said the campaign is the point. In BlizzCon week, executive producer Matt Zitterman told the Official Xbox Podcast, as reported by GamesRadar+ on 16 September:

Someone on the team, I don't know who, wrote a sticky note and put it in our director's office, and it says, 'Best campaign ever.' He looks at that all the time, and it's really become a pillar of how we think about the game.

Zitterman called it an example of "taking what was great in Diablo 4, and taking it further", and pointed at how Diablo IV told "an amazing, cinematic story" as the thing to do better. The story itself is in everything we know.

How it is filed

Both are developer statements: named people at Blizzard, on the record, not in a Blizzard post. Carter's post is cited through GamesRadar+'s report rather than X itself - X answers the same way for a deleted post as for a live one, so this site's link checker could never notice it going away.

"Community involvement, as early as possible"

In a BlizzCon group interview with Kotaku, John Mueller said Joe Shely had written "community involvement, as early as possible" down as a pillar for the team at the start of development.
