Everything we know about Diablo V

Original HellCodex illustration. Not official Blizzard artwork.

Diablo V starts from a position the series has never taken before: you lost. Not in a cutscene, not in a prologue you are meant to reverse. The heroes of the past failed, Sanctuary fell, and Diablo now rules from the throne of Westmarch.

This page collects everything Blizzard has actually said, separated from what has merely been repeated. For the atomic version - one statement, one state, one source - see Everything we know.

The premise

Sanctuary is no longer the battlefield of the Eternal Conflict. It is the staging ground. Diablo uses the world as a launch point for an assault on the High Heavens, and uses its people - and their souls - as weapons in that war.

You play the Heir to Westmarch. Blizzard has confirmed that there is a connection between your character and Diablo, and has deliberately not explained what it is. The initial scope of the game is the Western Continent.

Humanity after the fall

There is no clean division between survivors and monsters. Blizzard describes humans who have submitted to Diablo, humans who have joined cults, and humans who have been corrupted into powerful Dread Commanders.

A world that does not stay put

The most structurally interesting confirmation is that the world itself is procedurally altered. Return to an area and the terrain, the points of interest, the enemies, the rewards and the degree of demonic corruption can all differ.

Blizzard has framed this as more than randomised dungeon layouts: the world is meant to reflect Diablo's advancing rule. That framing is a developer statement rather than a shipped feature, and we label it accordingly.

The caravan replaces the town

Because there is no safe city left, there is no town hub. Instead you travel with a growing caravan of survivors who serve as merchants, companions, quest givers and narrative characters, and possibly as upgrade stations for crafting and supply.

Two members have been named: a former Sister of the Sightless Eye, and a stranded Treasure Goblin looking for a new purpose in a ruined world.

Three classes, so far

  • Demon Hunter - two crossbows, mobility, attacks from the shadows.
  • Monk - melee combat with fists and holy power.
  • Plague Knight - a new class that spreads disease and then consumes it as a source of power.

More classes are to be revealed. Game director Joe Shely says the plan is to include more than any base Diablo game has had - a developer statement, not a number. The total has not been announced.

Items are going back to Diablo II

Itemisation is strongly influenced by Diablo II. Items of different sizes occupy different numbers of inventory squares again, equipment sets return, and runes and runewords in the Diablo II style are planned. Blizzard is experimenting with stat requirements on gear - an experiment, not a promise - and wants crafting to build on ideas from Lord of Hatred.

Progression and the endgame

None of this is in a Blizzard post yet; all of it is game director Joe Shely on the record in the weeks after the reveal, so it is filed as developer statements. Diablo V will take "a somewhat different approach" to Diablo IV's monster level scaling, and is meant to be decided more by the build you plan than by how fast you dodge. The team is committed to a complete endgame at launch, and is moving some of the systems' complexity into it on purpose.

When

Spring 2029. That is a window, not a date. Blizzard has also said it intends to publish regular development updates from 2027 onwards.

In the meantime the game is moving. It has had its own branch of the Diablo IV engine "for a while now", senior producer Tiffany Watt says, and on 14 October 2026 its cinematics director posted that the first cinematics shoot had taken place. Both are developer statements; no gameplay has been shown.

What is still unknown

Platforms, business model, pre-orders and editions, the exact date, alpha and beta timing, the number of classes, PvP, what the endgame actually consists of, seasons and a battle pass, crossplay and cross-progression, whether a permanent internet connection is required, and system requirements. All of it. See rumors and open questions.

What changed

Every correction and status change on this page is recorded here.

  • Added the first cinematics shoot (Neil David Carter, 14 October) and Tiffany Watt on Diablo V's own engine branch. Filed as developer statements.

  • Classes: added Joe Shely's statement that the roster is planned to exceed any base Diablo game's.

  • Corrected: stat requirements on gear were listed as confirmed. Blizzard's panel recap says it is "experimenting with" them, which is a statement of intent - they are now filed as one.

  • Progression and endgame section added from Joe Shely's interviews: level scaling, planning over execution, and an endgame promised at launch. Filed as developer statements.

  • Itemisation, caravan and procedural world sections added from the published panel recap.

    Dev statement Confirmed
  • Page created after the BlizzCon 2026 announcement.

The 100 years everybody is quoting

A century since Mephisto fell, seven years since Diablo took Sanctuary. Both figures came from developers - and neither of them means "100 years after Diablo won".
